Sleeping on an airplane often requires more effort than it does relaxation, but it is absolutely worth it. Late night flights are called "red eyes" for a reason, and no matter how energetic or fit you may be, muscling through your day on minimal sleep is never a good idea. That said, late-night flights are also an extremely practical way to get more bang for your vacation buck. The key is to have a system for getting some shuteye between runways. Here are a few tips that can make nodding off considerably easier.

Choose Your Itinerary Wisely

When overnight travel is inevitable, nothing is more important than choosing the right itinerary. Pick the nonstop every time and, if one isn't available, choose the itinerary with the longest single leg. You'll have more uninterrupted time to nap, wake up and try to doze off again. Late departures are especially helpful unless you plan to work during the trip.

Next, consider the seat type and location. Use the restroom before you board and pick a window seat. It provides more space to lean against the window and no one will climb over you. Seats near the front of the cabin tend to be quieter, but avoid anything near a lavatory or galley.

Save frequent flyer miles for long-haul international flights that have lie-flat seats in first or business class. Carriers known for exceptionally high standards -– including Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates -– have extra-wide seats similar to a real bed. Others pack in business class passengers like sardines or use seats that recline at an angle. Use SeatGuru or Routehappy to learn more about the options on your flight.

Prepare Your Body

Some people swear by prescription sleep aids, but always consult a physician before attempting to use medication to get better sleep. You'll want to avoid alcohol, which, coupled with the dry air, may cause dehydration and make waking up a nightmare. Stay hydrated during the day so you can avoid eating or drinking anything during the flight and restroom breaks. The most dedicated travelers will gradually adjust their alarm clocks up to three hours earlier than normal. You're not getting quality sleep so there is some virtue in at least getting a jump on handling jet lag -– especially if you're headed west.

Finally, bring some high-quality earplugs and a face mask to keep out unwanted sound and light. Don't rely on the cheap freebies provided, which are scratchy at best. Loose clothing will help avoid the stuffy feeling that comes from recirculated air. Untuck your shirt before you shut your eyes.

Recover From The Ordeal

A problem with most red-eye flights is that you arrive exhausted in the morning. In order to wake up, head to the lounge or your hotel and submerge your face in the nearest sink. Your body's reflex is to lower your heart rate when your head is submerged. You'll feel calmer and, a cup of coffee later, ready to face the day.

Next, find food. Some protein and fiber will provide more lasting energy than the sugar rush from a doughnut. Snacks, like showers, can be found at many airport lounges, so either buy a day pass or purchase a membership if you regularly take overnight flights. Nuts are a good call. Eat more of them than you were offered on the plane.

              Use of Digital Multimeter

A multimeter, also called a volt-ohm meter or VOM, is a device that measures resistance, voltage and current in electronic circuits. Some also test diodes and continuity. Multimeters are small, lightweight and battery operated, and they can test a wide variety of electronic components in many situations, making them indispensable tools for anyone who needs to test and repair electronic circuits.

Method 1 of 5: Measuring Resistance

Connect the multimeter to the circuit. Insert the black probe into the common terminal and the red probe into the terminal marked for measuring volts and ohms. The terminal may also be marked for testing diodes.

Twist the selector knob to set the multimeter to measure resistance. This may be represented by the Greek letter Omega, which stands for ohms, the unit of measurement for resistance.

Turn off power to the circuit.

Remove the resistor you want to measure. If you leave the resistor in the circuit you may not get an accurate reading.

Touch the tips of the probes to each side of the resistor.

Read the display, taking care to note the units. A reading of 10 may indicate 10 ohms, 10 kilo-ohms or 10 mega-ohms.

Method 2 of 5: Measuring Voltage

Connect the multimeter to a circuit. Put the black probe in the common terminal and the red probe in the terminal marked for measuring volts and ohms.

Set the multimeter it for the voltage you're measuring. You can measure volts DC (direct current), millivolts DC or volts AC (alternating current). If your multimeter has an autorange function, it's not necessary to select the voltage you're measuring

Measure AC voltage by placing the probes across the component. It's not necessary to observe polarity.

Observe polarity when measuring DC voltage or millivoltage. Place the black probe on the negative side of the component and the red probe on the positive side.

Read the display, taking care to note the units.

If you prefer, you can use the touch-hold feature to keep the reading on the display after you remove the probes. The multimeter will beep each time a new voltage is detected

.Method 3 of 5: Measuring Current

Choose either the terminal marked for measuring 10 amps or the one marked for measuring 300 milliamps (mA). If you're unsure of the current, start in the 10 amp terminal until you're sure the current is less than 300 milliamps.

Set the multimeter to measure current. This may be represented by the letter A.

Turn off power to the circuit.

Break the circuit. To measure current, you must place the multimeter in series with the circuit. Place the probes on either side of the break, observing polarity (black probe on negative side, red probe on positive side.)

Turn the power on. The current will run through the circuit, up the red probe and through the multimeter, then out the black probe and into the circuit.

Read the display, remembering whether you are measuring amps or milliamps. You can use the touch-hold feature if desired.

Method 4 of 5: Testing Diodes

Insert the black probe into the common terminal and the red probe into the terminal marked for measuring ohms, volts or diode test.

Use the selector knob to choose the test diode function. This may be represented by a symbol representing a diode, an arrow pointing at a vertical line.

Turn the power off to the circuit.

Test forward bias. Place the red probe on the positive side of the diode and the black probe on the negative side. If you get a reading of less than 1 but more than 0, the forward bias is good.

Reverse the probes to test reverse bias. If the display reads "OL (overload)," this indicates that reverse bias is good.

A reading of "OL" or 0 while testing forward bias, and 0 while testing reverse bias indicates that the diode is bad.

Some multimeters will beep when the reading is less than 1. This doesn't necessarily indicate a good diode, because a shorted diode will also cause a beep.

Method 5 of 5: Measuring Continuity

Put the black probe into the common terminal and the red probe into the terminal used to measure volts and ohms.

Set the multimeter to the same setting you use to test diodes.

Turn the power off to the circuit.

How to Reduce the File Size of Google Fonts for your Website

Google Fonts make web pages look beautiful but external fonts can also increase the page load time of your website. Learn how to reduce the size of Google font file

Google Fonts is a collection of open fonts that you can use in your websites, documents and other design projects without any restrictions around licensing.

It takes a single line of code to embed any of the Google Font families into your website design. Just substitute the font family in the following code (line #2) with the name of Google Font and copy-paste it inside the tag of your HTML template.

Page Speed and Google Web Fonts

While Google Fonts can make your website look good, there’s one related problem – they increase the page load time of your website because the font files have to downloaded on the visitor’s computer and some of them, like the Cabin Sketch font, can exceed 100 KB in size.

There is however an easy workaround to help you reduce the file size of the Google Fonts so that they do not reduce the load time of a web page. Instead of using the entire Google font family, you can specify a limited set of letters or digits that are used in your text and Google will dynamically generate a new font file containing only the requested characters.

How to Reduce the Size of Google Font Files

All you have to do is add a new text parameter to the Google font request URL and value of this parameter will have all the letters that you need.

For instance, if I need to render the text Digital Inspiration in Cabin Sketch font, the modified CSS requesting the Google font file will look something like this:

The original Google font file was around 101 kb but with this limited text, the font file is reduced to 7.6 KB.

Google Fonts are commonly used to render the text of logos and and headings (h1, h2, h3, etc.) on a web page so you can modify the CSS accordingly. Alternatively, if you wish to request all alphabets and numerals in the Google Font but none of the extra glyphs, your font CSS will looking something like this:

The font file in this case is 37 KB in size and that’s still 64% lower than the original Google font file. Also, if you are wondering why I have included %20 in the text list, it represents the encoded space character. Similarly, you can add %27 and %22 to the list for single quote (‘) and double quote (“) respectively.
